The continent of Europe is considered to be the land to the west of the Ural mountains in Russia. It is the second smallest continent and accounts for about 7% of the earths land area and covers 4 million square miles, much of which is European Russia, the remaining land being divided amongst almost 50 countries (48 at the last count). Consequently maps of European countries vary enormously in style, content and language. Regional mapping is common alongside highly detailed local and national mapping.
